This Fuji is built on a classic road frame, 4130 butted CroMoly steel (same material as Surly uses). It is a 56cm frame, ideal for riders under 6'.
The front end looks like a mountain bike: 3x7 GripShifters on an aluminum bar and ControlTech stem. I used the original fork and installed a 1" thread-less headset. Brake calipers are Suntour Radius models, fitted with new cartridge-style brake shoes and pads. Combining mountain bike brake levers and steering with a road frame and calipers makes for an exciting ride.
A road brake caliper pulls harder on the brake cable than a conventional road lever. The flat bar transfers steering commands much more quickly to the front wheel.
Overall the ride is very fast but you can haul yourself to a stop quicker than you might think.Triple front crank and rear derailleur are Shimano RSX (entry level touring grade), front derailleur is Shimano Deore. Chain, cables and housing were all installed new on the bicycle. Blackburn rear rack. The bicycle was road tested in downtown Seattle, from Capitol Hill to downtown to the Rainier Valley and back. Shifting is precise, handling is very responsive and the ride is comfortable.
